What area do you serve?
We generally offer home births within one hour of Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital. We are happy to care for families outside of this area who choose to birth at Trillium House or want prenatal care only.
Do you bill insurance?
We are out of network with all private insurance, but we contract with a billing company who will work with you to submit a claim and get as much coverage as possible.
Do you accept Medicaid?
Yes! We are out of network with managed care organizations, but we will work with you to get you coverage through straight Medicaid.
Do you run labwork?
Yes. We offer standard pregnancy, postpartum, and newborn labwork in our office and at home visits. Occasionally we may refer you to another provider for specialized testing.
Do you perform ultrasounds?
We refer to other providers for ultrasounds, either with our in-house ultrasonographer or with another local provider, depending on your preference and insurance coverage.
Do you offer waterbirth?
We love waterbirths! We have birth pools available for anyone interested in laboring and/or birthing in water. There is no extra fee for this service.
Do you have hospital privileges?
No, we cannot act as midwife for women delivering in the hospital. Clients in prenatal care and planning a hospital birth will transfer to a hospital midwife or OB either in the last few weeks of pregnancy or in early labor. When clients who planned a home or birth center birth require transfer to the hospital in labor, we will go along to facilitate a smooth transition, but the hospital midwives or OBs are the providers.
Can I get pain meds at my home birth?
No. Labor analgesia carries risks that should be managed in a hospital setting. However we love supporting you with alternative pain management options such as hydrotherapy, massage, position changes, and visualization.
I have current or past health issues that may make me higher risk. Can I still have a community birth?
Possibly! Certain risk factors should be managed in a hospital setting, but other risk factors can be managed highly successfully in a community setting. Common risk factors that are often compatible with a home or birth center birth include: one prior cesarean, a history of preterm labor or birth, a history of gestational diabetes, a history of gestational hypertension or preeclampsia, and age over 35. Will my baby get a birth certificate and SSN?
Yes! We will file for a birth certificate and social security card for your baby if you deliver in our care. This service is included in our package fee.
